Disney's Fallen Princess - A Reality Check on Happily Ever After by Dina Goldstein

I recently have come across Dina Goldstein’s photography artworks “Disney Fallen Princess” and it makes me both laughing out loud & sad at the same time and wonder what if all these Disney Princess had left their “Fantasy Land” where everything is all happy & filled with flowers & pink glitters and thrown them into our world, what their lives would be like? Dina Goldstein; a skilled photographer who has explored what might have happened to fairy tale characters once the well known part of the story ended.

The Fallen Princess place fairy tale characters in a modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The "Happily ever after" is replaced with realistic outcome and address current issues.

The project was inspired by her observation of a 3 years old girl, who were developing an interest in Disney’s fairy tales. As a new mother like Dina herself, she has been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girl’s fascinated with Princesses & their desire to dress up like them. The Disney version almost always has sad beginning, and overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess.

As a young girl growing up abroad like Dina Goldstein, she was not exposed to fairy tale stories. These new discoveries lead to her fascination with the origins of fairy tales. She explored the original brothers Grimm’s stories & found that they have very dark & sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. So Dina began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princess juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around the world, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

With limited funds, Dina Goldstein began to assemble her series, incorporating many important details in each image. Cinderella sits in a dive bar in a dive bar in Vancouver’s infamous Hasting Street. Snow White is trapped in a domestic nightmare, surrounded by unkempt children with a lazy, out of work Prince in the background. Rapunzel deals with cancer in a hospital room and lost all her hair, sitting beside her long blonde wig. An overweight Red Riding Hood is on her way to her grandma’s, carting fast food in her basket.

So after seeing all of Dina Goldstein’s "Disney’s Fallen Princess" series, did it make you laugh? Or it makes you sad? Share with us how you feel about it. I personally loved it! I give Dina lot's of prop of taking on the issue of that we've been brain washing little girls with all these fairy tale princess "Illusions" that there will always be a "Prince Charming" who is not only handsome, but also rich and powerful to come rescue us; but instead, Dina gives fairy tales a "Reality Check", what it is like if those Princess lives in our world. Where not all places are always pink & pretty, Prince/Men might not always be charming.

But in no way I am bitter about these fairy tale stories! Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVE to go see a nice romantic comedy & cried at the end because of the happy ending! But I think we should educate our little girls to be a "Self-Rescuing Princess"!  you can achieve anything you like and build your own castle! And if there is a Prince Charming comes along, then it’s wonderful! But if not, "Happily Ever After" is all within your reach, with or without a "Prince Charming"! But don't ever be so jaded and being taking over by the bitterness & regrets of your bad experiences from the past.  After all, Life is just too boring without hope, love, and a little “Magic” in our lives don't you think?

To make this blog posting not too depressing, here is a little dose of the typical "Happy Ever After" for all of you! and don't forget to "Dream" a little and believe in a little "Magic" makes life that much more fun & interesting! :-)

Until next time, be well and look fabulous!

Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers Delightfully Quirky Prickly Pair Chairs

Now this is a cactus that you’ll want to sit upon! "Prickly Pair Chairs" is a furniture project born out of the creative experience of a Mexican designer in Europe, designed by Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers

The chairs juxtapose Mexican and European aesthetic values, incorporating the formal design elements and quirks of both to create a cultural blend. They are frivolous and humorous yet simultaneously encourage reflection and acceptance. Shapes, materials, colors, textures and finishes collide in irreverent and playful harmony; the Prickly pair chairs are a statement against prejudice and preconceptions.

The classical French oval chair originated in the Rococo period during the reign of Louis XV and has since been adopted throughout central Europe. Although now completely familiar, its form was radical at the time – considered over-decorated nonsense which dispensed with rectilinear styles in favor of more light-hearted asymmetric forms. Rococo's naturalistic and exuberant ornamentation mixed natural and artificial forms of all kinds, from plant motifs to representations of the grotesque.

The Nopal cactus symbolizes Mexican heritage and national pride. According to legend, the Gods told the Aztecs to build Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) in the place they saw an eagle standing on a Nopal, devouring a snake. To this day, the image resides on the National Shield.

While Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns may immediately convey "Mexican-ness" to European audiences (even though they were filmed in Spain and Italy), it is the sight of cactus and Nopales that brings meaning to Mexican daily life and form the most beloved symbols of the country’s culture.

The blend of these two iconographic elements was achieved in this "matching" pair of chairs. "Prickly Pair Chairs" respects the original chair but concludes that its new, hybrid form synthesizes the ‘best of both worlds'; it evokes nostalgia for what was left behind and helps facilitate a sense of belonging in a new environment by fusing two powerful cultural symbols.
